Course Overview

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming part of healthcare. It can summarise information, identify patterns, support documentation, assist research and contribute to clinical decision-support systems.

But there is an important distinction: an AI system can produce a convincing answer without producing a correct answer.

For healthcare professionals, AI literacy therefore means more than knowing how to use an AI tool. It means knowing when to use it, when to question it, how to verify its output, how to protect patient information and when a human professional must remain firmly in control.

This introductory course provides healthcare professionals with a practical framework for using artificial intelligence safely, critically and responsibly. No technical or programming knowledge is required.

Who Is This Course For?

Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, allied healthcare professionals, researchers, Medical Affairs professionals and healthcare managers — as well as students and professionals entering healthcare, pharmaceutical medicine or life sciences.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • explain the basic differences between AI, machine learning and generative AI
  • describe how large language models generate responses
  • recognise common limitations of generative AI, including fabricated or inaccurate information
  • critically evaluate AI-generated healthcare information
  • recognise potential sources of bias
  • understand basic privacy and information-governance considerations
  • distinguish general-purpose AI tools from AI used as regulated medical-device software
  • identify healthcare tasks where AI may appropriately assist rather than replace professional judgement
  • apply a simple five-question safety check before relying on AI-generated information
